Seattle & Vancouver 3 - July 2013

Steve Smith said he'll take me to "his town". He did, we went to Steveston, BC!. Besides an amazing wharf, they have there an old Shipyard, the "Britannia", complete with carpentry, engine and machine shops for boat building and repair.
This is a VERY old industrial planer (I believe that's the name). What impressed me is the contrast between the heavy & dark machinery and the woodwork all around in the structure.
..
It was a very hot and sunny day in Victoria Harbor, BC.
It's difficult for me to depict sun and color when it's so hot; the sun burns every color. Luckily, I could draw most of this from under a shadow on a higher place.
For the people, a movie can be the best source. Colored quite later.
..
Coloreado mucho despues.
I don't have much chance of sketching when I'm home, but when I travel I can make some 60-80 drawings in a month (next month!!), that last thru the year. Then, I try to post my drawings twice a week, as religiously as going to church: Thursday and Sunday. As the US Postal service: "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night".  (Why I tell this, I don't know).
This is a hairdresser in Ballard, Seattle on the corner of NW 59th St & 15th Ave. It was closed. I did not know how to color the seats so I left them white and I like it as it is.
.

Seattle & Vancouver 2 - July 2013

There is a long bridge connecting Downtown Vancouver with Granville Island -that's not really an island- with all the intrincacy of the american highways, that always impressed me. This place had the added value of a fresh shadow on those sizzling days in July..
..

When I was in Vancouver I made a sketch of this concrete plant that did not come out so well. I was uncomfortable and had to rush it. And had no clue how to color it, so I fumbled it.
I took then a photo from a better angle -not available to stay and draw from- and yesterday tried something I'd not done yet: a bigger A4 drawing. All I do is 24x17. A4 (21x30) is 50% bigger.
When I finished I found that drawing bigger has its quirks and perks. And, again, had no clue how to color it, so I left as this. I will begin exploring monochrome line drawing too. I think not all scenes are up to watercolor and also that there's a point on line detail that leaves no space for washes or color.
..

Pike Place Market is a public market overlooking the Elliott Bay waterfront in Seattle, WA. There are two bridges crossing Western Ave, and under one of them there is a cafeteria. It has windows to the street, and also some 'inner windows' through which some light spills into the otherwise dark halls.
So you can also peek from the halls onto the cafeteria's kitchen, and this is what you see.
..

Port Moody is a district near Coquitlam,BC, where my friend Steve lives. After begging him to find a nice place to sketch he drove me there on a Sunday, to the Port Moody Station Museum, that highlights the history of the place from the aboriginal presence to the 1940s.
It was quite hot, so even when at the front is the magnificent Venosta, a first-class sleeper car, I stayed safely inside the museum and made two drawings in the shadow. This here was the desk of the station manager in the 1940's, right from a hard-boiled detective novel.
..

I spent a morning in Stanley Park (Vancouver) forcing myself to draw nature, something I never do since I live in a massive grey latin american city.
I did not know what to do. I walked for a while around that wonderful place, possibly the most amazing park close to a city in the world.
After an hour looking at trees and leaves and plants and more trees I decided upon this dry trunk. And a rock. The only nature alive are this tiny leaves crossing by.
That's what happens when you are an architect: one sees nature only as building materials...
..

Today I posted a 'half done' A4 sketch and learned a lesson. A friend told me about 'the voices' in a drawing. Line work is a voice, shadow another, color another, etc. as in an orchestra. So what I felt unfinished could do with some shadows but needed no color, in opposition to my idea of coloring everything.
So I post now another one, that should go together with the first. This is a sketch I did in Vancouver. I did not finish it there as I run out of time and planned to color it. I brought it back as this and was lingering on how to color it. Today's comments showed me I do not always need color since some drawings are intrincate enough and need no more.
..

Step by Step Rosario Tugboat

Wide angle perspective appeals a lot to me. It comes from my photo experience, as my Wide Angle 16-35 zoom was the lens I had on all the time.
There is a kind of spatial structure one can and should build at complex angles. So, I created an album with a step by step.
I made a photo of this one when it was done 6 months ago because I knew some day I would use it. If one 'builds' the space at first, then all falls into place.
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=oa.384448061677295&type=1
..

Seattle & Vancouver 1 - July 2013

The Relief was built in 1929 as a 50' halibut boat.
More than 75 years later, it was saved from the boneyard by Sandbar Restaurant on Granville Island, Vancouver. They mounted the vessel in front of a concrete footing of the Granville Street Bridge to improve the view for diners. 17x24, ink and watercolor.
My story is that I was very tired and did not want to draw all the details in the bridge, so I rushed it with the inkwork so that was that. In the end, the bridge and the ink background is what I like most... 17x24, ink and watercolor.
.

Victoria, BC Johnson St Bridge. This is what one sees on the right of the bridge crossing into downtown. The afternoon light was amazing, and the sun came down very late, around 9 PM, so it was as hanging there forever.
The light was the golden hue that in photography is called "the magic hour". An almost horizontal light that makes anything look as 'gleaming', powdered with magic dust by Tinker Bell.
I've read Stanley Kubrick drove crazy his cast & crew in "Full metal jacket" having them idle through the whole day and only shooting a couple afternoon hours on that light.
I wish I could have captured  it, but it's not my sketching style.
..
BC Place is a multi-purpose stadium located at the north side of False Creek, in Vancouver.
One sizzling hot summer morning I was looking for an interesting view and sat in this spot where the really important issue was not the angle, but that I was sitting under the narrow shadow of a big advertising sign.
..

My friend Steve treated me to a couple days camping near Vancouver.  The very first day he instructed me how to use 'bear (pepper) spray' on a bear. It has a safety clip, the bear has to be between 4 and 5 meters and you have to spray on the wind direction, otherwise it works on you. It came with a bear & tourist funny story that made me chill.
The first day I chose a place to draw apart from the camp, but planned my escape route as to plunge in the water if  bears came to peek. The second day I decided the good place to draw without half my mind checking for bears was the camp itself, really close to Steve.
..

Ballard is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Seattle. My first days there I was ill, so much of what I did was around the neighborhood, since after some time I needed to back to rest.
The houses are beautiful. Those wooden homes are so strange to us -in Argentina it's all brick and mortar- that I wanted to draw them all.
So, one morning I drew one. The next morning another. When the third day I wanted to go out and draw the yet another, I looked at drawings #1 and #2 (thanks, St Exupery) and realized that -in my sketches- they looked as made by the same guy at the same time, though in reality they were absolutely different. So I gave up and wen to draw something else.
..
I'm posting something on the way: I'd never done a photo of a sketch, everything I posted and have here is scanned.
On the other hand, I advised friends on how to do a photo of a sketch if you have no scanner, so I had to give it a try.
Long lens (not "wide"), immobilize camera against a chair, or whatever is firm, shoot in the shadow and have the drawing plane perpendicular to the lens.
After that, retouch with levels, selecting some areas with a big feathering, and levels over and over, refining the contrast. It works.
..

Two step: shadows on ink and then watercolor!

Today I learned something. I followed Robert Muts tip and solved something I had no idea how to do: How to place shadows in a watercolor piece without muddling the color when it mixes with the darker hue. .
Possibly there are many more sophisticated ways, but this one works wonders for my needs. Instead of adding darker watercolor over a brighter one -or the opposite- Robert suggested I paint the shadows with ink, and then watercolor over it.
As the ink is fixed, it does not melt, and the watercolor over it is perfectly saturated.
Of course this is a crude example I did as a test, and don't ask me what this is. It's just a thing full of angles and shadows.
Also I drew -and painted- it twice, one with china ink and the other with Noodler's black Bulletproof. I don't see much difference.
This two step is before and after coloring, quite obviously....
Then I made a real sketch. I always wanted to paint the night, and had no idea how to do it. His method does wonders. First shadows in ink and THEN watercolor.
This a photo I took on Bologna last year. I always wished to draw an image like that.  That's how to do it.  Thanks, man.
..

Italia 6º Set 2012. 17x24, Pen & Watercolor

01.9 2 Marzabotto
Last september in Italy my trip begun in Marzabotto, a very nice and small 'paese' on the way to Bologna.  I stayed there two days, and after that had to endure a very heavy rain in my van for days, and could go nowhere. But luckily I had the chance -before getting wet- to make a couple sketchyes.
This is one. The only thing I can say is that the town had one street and four blocks, that the owner of this farm was very nice (and talkative!), and that the beer in the nearby café was excellent.
..

01.9 2 Marzabotto
This is the second drawing I did that day in Marzabotto. What to say?
My 'in-depth analysis':  I tried to draw everything in ink, and the stones in pencil. It came out right. That's it.
..
Quedo lindo.

9.9.12 Bar Oberdan
Via Guglielmo Oberdan, 11, Bologna, Province of Bologna.
No sagas sung yet about this humble bar.  No Renaissance chroniques mention it,  no great heros slept on its upper rooms, no Christmas Big Lottery ticket winner was sold there.
..

14.9 2 Firenze, calle y farol
A small alley in Firenze. What to say about this?  Well, sitting in a quiet lonely 'Feng-Shui correct' room to think must be a challenge if you live here.
.

16.9 Palazzo Della Signoria, Firenze
The Palazzo Vecchio is the town hall of Florence, Italy. This massive, Romanesque, crenellated fortress-palace is among the most impressive town halls of Tuscany.
Overlooking the Piazza della Signoria with its copy of Michelangelo's David statue as well the gallery of statues in the adjacent Loggia dei Lanzi, it is one of the most significant public places in Italy.
..

San Gimignano 20.9
There are a myriad walkways on the heights of the city. It's a small town, so no Cable TV. This was a very grey day, it rained on and off.... I don't know if the place was not well chosen, or I did a sloppy job, but I was never too happy about it.
..

Italia 5º Set 2012. 17x24, Pen & Watercolor

08.9.2 Bologna . Cortile interno di Palazzo d'Accursio
A small pavilion in the center of Bologna, somewhere in the center of a "cortile". It looked as a highly sophisticated water well.
I was trying to do shadows in ink only, but I jumped right away back to watercolor.
.

Via da' Mori,  a small street in Firenze, last september.
What to say? Charming, as everything in that city.
.
Via da' Mori, una callecita de Florencia.
Que decir? Encantadora, como todo en esa ciudad.

13.9.12 Libreria Nanni, Bologna
In Via Dè Musei, Bologna, under one of the many archways, you see the sign "Libreria Nanni, Libri Rari ed Esauriti". I'ts the oldest library in the city. It was founded in 1825 by Famiglia Marchesi, that bought an even older stamp print shop.
Today it trades in new and used books, and being a member of the touring Club also sells tourist maps. It announces: " atlanti; enciclopedie; guide turistiche; libri; libri antichi; libri culturali ed artistici; libri d'arte; libri di storia; libri di storia contemporanea; libri fuori catalogo; libri rari; libri scolastici; libri tecnici; libri usati; riviste d' epoca; testi universitari"
..
Anuncia: " atlanti; enciclopedie; guide turistiche; libri; libri antichi; libri culturali ed artistici; libri d'arte; libri di storia; libri di storia contemporanea; libri fuori catalogo; libri rari; libri scolastici; libri tecnici; libri usati; riviste d' epoca; testi universitari"

02.9 2 Lizzano
My daughter Lu's "Fidanzato", Diego, lives in Lizzano In Belvedere, Province of Bologna, Italy. This is what I saw from their home the day I met his parents last year in september.
.

Firenze 18.9 2 (17x24)
A narrow Alley in Firenze, leading to Firenze's Main Attraction, La Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore.  You can see it from all around Firenze, but seldom have a full view. The Duomo, as it is ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style and stood unfinished for 150 years.
.

San Gimignano 24.9.12
At San Gimignano I tried my Lamy Calligraphy pens a couple times with various results . The pen is wild and the angle too…
I was trying to capture those clothelines and hanging stuff. I know It's difficult to understand the angle, but I like it, after so much civilized sketching…
.

Last summer, some visits to a club shipyard

That day was hot as hell, so I found a spot under some trees and drew from under the shadow. Not many options when the sun hits for real.
That shipyard is a real mess. Things lie scattered and it was not easy finding good angles.
I liked this one very much.
I was trying a new Hero pen and did the trees with it. The outcome is awful!.
You just can´t use heavy line work when all the rest is delicate....

An old tractor

I am crazy for old machines, what can I say. I'm specially proud of this sketch.
I used the mix of Payne's Grey and Burnt Sienna Percy showed me and it rocks.
