Two step: shadows on ink and then watercolor!

Today I learned something. I followed Robert Muts tip and solved something I had no idea how to do: How to place shadows in a watercolor piece without muddling the color when it mixes with the darker hue. .
Possibly there are many more sophisticated ways, but this one works wonders for my needs. Instead of adding darker watercolor over a brighter one -or the opposite- Robert suggested I paint the shadows with ink, and then watercolor over it. 
As the ink is fixed, it does not melt, and the watercolor over it is perfectly saturated. 
Of course this is a crude example I did as a test, and don't ask me what this is. It's just a thing full of angles and shadows.
Also I drew -and painted- it twice, one with china ink and the other with Noodler's black Bulletproof. I don't see much difference. 
This two step is before and after coloring, quite obviously....

Then I made a real sketch. I always wanted to paint the night, and had no idea how to do it. His method does wonders. First shadows in ink and THEN watercolor. 
This a photo I took on Bologna last year. I always wished to draw an image like that.  That's how to do it.  Thanks, man.

Esta es una idea de Robert Muts para que no se empasten las sombras en acuarela. Primero, dar sombras en tinta china, y despues colorear encima en acuarela. 
Los colores no se mezclan, ya que la tinta esta fija. Una maravilla.
Hice dos pruebas, en tinta y china y Noodlers, ambas diluidas en agua. no veo diferencia...
Despues hice un dibujo en serio, sobre una foto de Bologna del año pasado.. 
Siempre quise dibujar "la noche", y ahora siento que encontre el metodo.

01.9 2 Marzabotto

Last september in Italy my trip begun in Marzabotto, a very nice and small 'paese' on the way to Bologna.  I stayed there two days, and after that had to endure a very heavy rain in my van for days, and could go nowhere. But luckily I had the chance -before getting wet- to make a couple sketchyes.

This is one. The only thing I can say is that the town had one street and four blocks, that the owner of this farm was very nice (and talkative!), and that the beer in the nearby café was excellent.

En septiembre pasado en Italia mi viaje empezo en Marzabotto, un 'paese' pequeño y muy agradable, camino a Bologna.

Me quede dos dias, tras los que tuve que soportar una lluvia torrencial dentro de mi camioncito por dias y sin poder ir a ninguna parte. Por suerte tuve la oportunidad -antes de mojarme- de hacer un par de dibujos.

Este es uno. Lo unico que podria decir de este lugar es que el pueblo tenia una calle y cuatro manzanas, que el dueño de esta granja era muy amable (y charleta!) y que la cerveza en el café vecino era excelente.

No sagas sung yet about this humble bar.  No Renaissance chroniques mention it,  no great heros slept on its upper rooms, no Christmas Big Lottery ticket winner was sold there.

Nadie canto sagas sobre este humilde bar. No es mencionado en cronica alguna del Renacimiento, ningun heroe durmio en las habitaciones superiores y nunca se vendio alli el billete ganador de la Gran Loteria de Navidad.

16.9 Palazzo Della Signoria, Firenze

The Palazzo Vecchio is the town hall of Florence, Italy. This massive, Romanesque, crenellated fortress-palace is among the most impressive town halls of Tuscany.

Overlooking the Piazza della Signoria with its copy of Michelangelo's David statue as well the gallery of statues in the adjacent Loggia dei Lanzi, it is one of the most significant public places in Italy.

El Palazzo Vecchio alberga a la Municipalidad de Florencia. Esta masiva fortaleza romanica es uno de los edificios publicos mas importantes de la Toscana.

Sobrevuela la plaza della Signoria -con su copia del David de Miguel Angel y la galeria de estatuas en la adyacente Logia dei Lanzi- coronando uno de los espacios publicos mas importantes de Italia.

San Gimignano 20.9

There are a myriad walkways on the heights of the city. It's a small town, so no Cable TV. This was a very grey day, it rained on and off.... I don't know if the place was not well chosen, or I did a sloppy job, but I was never too happy about it.

Hay ahi una serie de terrazas y pasajes, es un lugar muy escarpado. Estaba en un caminito que miraba por sobre los techos. Lo curioso es que esta tan lejos y escarpado que no hay TV por cable, esta lleno de antenas.

Nunca estuve muy contento, no se si es el lugar que no daba para mas. Y estaba gris, asi que no habia sombras ni nada de nada.

Cuatro dibujos para La Nacion #2

Una vez al mes, en el suplemento "Sabado" de La Nacion, publico uno de estos dibujos. La idea es que muestren la vida de la gente y la ciudad. 

Formamos un grupo que se va rotando para publicar, ya que toma un buen rato hacerlos y mas de uno al mes es demasiado. 

Pero estoy satisfecho, ya que antes tardaba mucho mas. Ahora me di cuenta que si un dibujo de 17 x 24 me toma tres horas, no hay motivo para que uno de estos, que es exactamente el doble (17 x 50), me tome mas de 6, y en eso estoy.

08.9.2 Bologna . Cortile interno di Palazzo d'Accursio

A small pavilion in the center of Bologna, somewhere in the center of a "cortile". It looked as a highly sophisticated water well.

I was trying to do shadows in ink only, but I jumped right away back to watercolor.

Estaba probando a hacer sombras solo en tinta, pero volvi rapidamente a las acuarelas.

13.9.12 Libreria Nanni, Bologna

In Via Dè Musei, Bologna, under one of the many archways, you see the sign "Libreria Nanni, Libri Rari ed Esauriti". I'ts the oldest library in the city. It was founded in 1825 by Famiglia Marchesi, that bought an even older stamp print shop.

Today it trades in new and used books, and being a member of the touring Club also sells tourist maps. It announces: " atlanti; enciclopedie; guide turistiche; libri; libri antichi; libri culturali ed artistici; libri d'arte; libri di storia; libri di storia contemporanea; libri fuori catalogo; libri rari; libri scolastici; libri tecnici; libri usati; riviste d' epoca; testi universitari"

En Via Dè Musei, Bologna, bajo uno de los muchas galerias, se ve el cartel "Libreria Nanni, Libri Rari ed Esauriti". Es la libreria mas vieja de la ciudad, fundada en 1825 por la familia Marchesi, que compro una estamperia aun mas antigua.

Hoy compra y vende textos nuevos y usados, y siendo miembro del Touring Club tambien vende mapas de turismo. 02.9 2 Lizzano

My daughter Lu's "Fidanzato", Diego, lives in Lizzano In Belvedere, Province of Bologna, Italy. This is what I saw from their home the day I met his parents last year in september.

Firenze 18.9 2 (17x24)

A narrow Alley in Firenze, leading to Firenze's Main Attraction, La Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore.  You can see it from all around Firenze, but seldom have a full view. The Duomo, as it is ordinarily called, was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style and stood unfinished for 150 years.

Una calle angosta en Florencia, que lleva a la atraccion principal de Florencia, La Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore. Se la ve desde todo Florencia, pero rara vez en una vista completa. El Duomo, como se lo llama habitualmente, fue iniciado en 1296 en estilo Gotico y quedo incompleto por 150 años.

At San Gimignano I tried my Lamy Calligraphy pens a couple times with various results . The pen is wild and the angle too…

I was trying to capture those clothelines and hanging stuff. I know It's difficult to understand the angle, but I like it, after so much civilized sketching…

Trataba de capturar esa ropa tendida y todas las cosas colgando. Yo se que no se entiende bien. Pero me gusta, despues de tanto dibujo civilizado….

Last summer, some visits to a club shipyard

 That day was hot as hell, so I found a spot under some trees and drew from under the shadow. Not many options when the sun hits for real.

That shipyard is a real mess. Things lie scattered and it was not easy finding good angles. 

I liked this one very much.

I was trying a new Hero pen and did the trees with it. The outcome is awful!. 

You just can´t use heavy line work when all the rest is delicate....

My Kitchen - The Prequel.

Ok, here I go again. I uploaded my "step by step" yesterday in various Facebook groups and received a lot of questions about whether I use a ruler or how I fix the perspective.

So here is another "step by step" since I see perspective does not come so easy if you are not trained. I am liking this J

Yes, I use ruler and pencil and "construction lines". I searched carefully into the USK Manifesto and found no mention against it. No sins commited, so I can use a ruler and still be in a state of grace!.

I am sorry… I know there is people that despise rulers, abhor of pencil pre-work and like to rough it.  Well, maybe I am too old, but if I can have a choice I prefer sleeping in a bed, since the floor feels harder for me lately.

So, here is what I do to get into the space where I am going to place my stuff. I need to place some lines to be safe. To UNDERSTAND the space I need to slip some precise lines. The rest comes easy:

All of this is to be done with a ruler.

1) I try to find an horizon line (HL - Red). It is an horizontal line that is usually at eyesight height. (The sea horizon is always there). And then I find a vanishing point (VPoint), a dot into the HL where all the lines tend to go to.

Then I need to look around for some strong lines (BLUE) that go into that VP. Here I see some lines in the kitchen top and in the tiling that I can use. I draw them with the ruler.

2) There is another set of lines (3) in the other direction, perpendicular to the blue lines. Those vanish into a VPoint thats off the drawing, so I kind of have to figure them up. Here they are, two green lines .

3) Once the main blue and green lines are placed, I divide the space between them proportionally, so I can use all these lines as guide for the freehand drawing that comes after all this. I divide the narrow end in -say- four spaces, and the same at the wider end. And them I draw some more lines (three thinner green lines here) that I will use as guides and erase after ink work.

4) I do the same with the blue lines, those that go to the Vpoint, here I make two sets of spaces I the narrow end and two sets in the wider, and, again, I place six thinner lines, three and three.

Now I can kick the ruler away but I do have a group of lines I can trust, and into which I can move without much danger. All the rest of the drawing can be made by guesswork, and that brings softness to the whole thing. But this "initial spatial structure" helped me undestand how the space where I am drawing works. If I get lost, it will not be by much.

And, all verticals, as a general rule, are vertical.

Mi cocina, Paso a Paso

KITCHEN STEP BY STEP (17 x 24 cm)

1) I plan the drawing in pencil, trying to undestand the structure of the space I am in, choosing centers of interest and deciding how to set a dialogue with the borders.

2) I move into ink. I use either Lamy M + EF nibs (Noodlers ink) or 0.1 & 0.3 graded pens. I try to define shapes that don't exactly coincide with the objects depicted, sometimes isolating parts of an object, sometimes mixing two shapes into one mass.

3) I plan and fill the dark areas, trying to place deep darks or full blacks near the points of interest.

4) Watercolor. I am trying to use a limited palette for the big pieces (Sepia, Indigo, Paynes' Gray, Neutral tint, Ivory black) and use color to place accents all over.

COCINA PASO A PASO (17 x 24 cm)

1) Planeo el dibujo en lapiz, tratando de entender la estructura del espacio en que estoy, eligiendo puntos de interes y decidiendo como dialogar con los bordes del dibujo.

2) Paso a tinta. Uso a veces lapiceras Lamy M y EF con tinta Noodler's. Otras, puntas fijas Pizzini 0,1 y 0,3.  Trato de definir formas que no coincidan exactamente con los limites de los objetos dibujados. A veces aislando parte de un objeto, otras mezclando varios objetos en una sola masa.

3) Planeo y relleno las zonas oscuras, tratando de ubicar sombras o negros cerca de los puntos de interes.

4) Acuarela. Estoy tratando de usar una paleta limitada para las piezas grandes (Sepia, Indigo, Paynes' Gray, Neutral tint, Ivory black) y usar color para marcar acentos en todas partes.

Mi casa. Ensayos para el Workshop

Hace unos dias me avisaron que mi propuesta para un workshop en el 4º simposio USK en Barcelona fue aceptada, asi que me puse a practicar. Como estamos de vacaciones y tengo a mi familia en casa, trato de estar aqui. Ademas  hace calor...

El "Workshop" se llama "Dibujar como un pajaro: Como elegir un punto de vista".

Para practicar esto, cualquier lugar es bueno, mientras uno pueda definir diferentes planos (frente, medio, fondo). Asi que hoy me sente tranquilo en mi cocina y empece a mover la cabeza  20 cm para aca, 20 cm para alla, 20 cm para atras, hasta que encontre este ángulo que me gusta. Estoy también tratando de dejar espacio en blanco libre en todos mis dibujos.

Si estuviera encadenado a la mesa no me daria cuenta…

Voy a tratar de armar ejercicios para que quienes acudan al taller entiendan que muchas veces un buen sketch no se logra solo con habilidad en el uso de la tinta o la acuarela, sino en cambio con astucia en lograr un punto de vista novedoso, establecer profundidad mediante el uso de planos, etc.

Para empezar a explorar esta idea, ayer me tire en el piso en al baño al lado del inodoro. La ultima vez que paso esto fue hace media vida tratando de sobrevivir a una borrachera, y es lo que creyo mi mujer cuando trato de entrar al baño...

Sketchcrawl 38 en Plaza Francia, 19 de enero

QUE ES UN "SKETCHCRAWL" ?

La idea es la de una maraton global de dibujo. Es una idea creada por Enrico Casarosa que tiene u foro al que se suben los dibujos de todo el mundo. 

("Crawl": avanzar arrastrandose con esfuerzo) Es tomar un dia entero para dibujar todo lo que hay alrededor de uno.

Se organiza un grupo para salir a dibujar juntos y participar asi de esta actividad con gente de todo el mundo para despues subir la produccion a www.sketchcrawl.com.

Un detalle que veo en la pagina de Sketchcrawl es este: La gente sale a dibujar pero lo que hace es una serie de sketches iguales a los de siempre. Un edificio, otro edificio, un paisaje, otro paisaje.

Me parece que "dibujar todo lo que hay alrededor de uno." durante todo un dia es algo diferente a repetir "el dibujo de la catedral" una vez mas , y pide otro tipo de uso del papel y del tiempo.
